When to Use Nominativ

The Nominativ is used after sein (to be), werden (to become), and bleiben (to remain).

Subject (Nominativ)

The person or thing doing the action.

Der Mann liest ein Buch. (The man reads a book.)

After sein/werden/bleiben

The predicate noun stays in Nominativ.

Er ist ein guter Lehrer. (He is a good teacher.)

Predicate Adjectives

After sein, werden, and bleiben, adjectives are not declined — they stay in their base form and are linked to the Nominativ subject:

  • Das Buch ist neu. (The book is new.)
  • Er wird alt. (He is getting old.)
  • Sie bleibt ruhig. (She stays calm.)

Common Mistakes

❌ Wrong

Using Akkusativ article for the subject

Den Mann schläft. ← den (Akkusativ) cannot be the subject

✅ Right

Subject always takes Nominativ

Der Mann schläft. ← der (Nominativ) is the subject article
