Reflexivpronomen

A reflexive pronoun refers back to the subject — the action reflects onto the person doing it. Most reflexive pronouns are identical to personal pronouns, with one key difference: 3rd person and formal Sie always use sich.

sich freuen — to be happysich waschen — to wash oneselfsich erinnern — to remember

Deklinationstabelle

PersonAkkusativDativ
ichmichmir
dudichdir
er / sie / essichsich
wirunsuns

Sie / sie (pl.)sichsich

First and second person reflexives match the personal pronouns (mich/dich/uns/euch). Third person and formal Sie use sich in both Akkusativ and Dativ — a single form that covers four pronouns.

For ich, du, wir, ihr: the reflexive pronoun is the same as the personal pronoun (mich, dich, uns, euch). For er/sie/es and Sie/sie: always sich.

Reflexiv vs. Personal

The same form can be reflexive or personal depending on context.

Personal (different person)

The pronoun refers to someone different from the subject.

Er sieht ihn. (He sees him — another person)

Reflexiv (same person)

The pronoun refers back to the subject itself.

Er sieht sich im Spiegel. (He sees himself)

Dativ Reflexiv

When a reflexive verb has another direct object (Akkusativ), the reflexive pronoun becomes Dativ:

SituationExampleReflexive case
No other objectIch wasche mich.Akkusativ (mich)
With direct objectIch wasche mir die Hände.Dativ (mir) — die Hände is the Akkusativ object

Common verbs that often use Dativ reflexives:

  • sich etwas vorstellen — Ich stelle mir vor, dass... (I imagine that...)
  • sich etwas ansehen — Sieh dir das an! (Look at that!)
  • sich etwas kaufen — Ich kaufe mir einen Kaffee. (I'm buying myself a coffee.)
  • sich Sorgen machen — Er macht sich Sorgen. (He is worried.)
