Doppelkonjunktionen (Two-Part Conjunctions)
German has paired conjunctions that work together. Each pair has specific word order rules.
The Six Major Pairs
| German | English | Type |
|---|---|---|
| sowohl ... als auch | both ... and | additive |
| nicht nur ... sondern auch | not only ... but also | additive |
| entweder ... oder | either ... or | alternative |
| weder ... noch | neither ... nor | negative |
| zwar ... aber | indeed ... but | concessive |
| je ... desto/umso | the ... the (comparative) | proportional |
sowohl ... als auch (both ... and)
Connects two equal, non-exclusive elements. No word order change in the clauses.
- Sowohl Kaffee als auch Tee sind beliebt. (Both coffee and tea are popular.)
- Sie spricht sowohl Deutsch als auch Englisch.
- Er ist sowohl intelligent als auch fleißig.
nicht nur ... sondern auch (not only ... but also)
Adds emphasis — not just one thing, but another as well. Sondern requires a contrast or addition.
entweder ... oder (either ... or)
Presents a choice between two alternatives. When entweder starts the main clause, the verb comes in Position 2 (right after entweder):
Negates both elements (neither...nor). Both elements are excluded.
- Weder mein Vater noch meine Mutter raucht.
- Er trinkt weder Kaffee noch Tee.
- Das ist weder richtig noch falsch.
zwar ... aber (indeed/admittedly ... but)
Acknowledges something true (zwar) and then contrasts it (aber). Similar to "admittedly...but".
je ... desto/umso (the ... the)
Expresses proportional relationship — the more X, the more Y. Uses comparatives in both halves.
Word order is critical:
-
After je: verb goes to the end (subordinate clause structure)
-
After desto/umso: verb goes to Position 2 (main clause structure)
-
(The more you practise, the better you become.)
-
