Infinitivsätze (Infinitive Clauses with zu)

Infinitive clauses use zu + Infinitiv instead of a full subordinate clause with a subject and conjugated verb.

Basic Structure

The infinitive clause has no subject — the subject is understood from the main clause.

Infinitivsatz — same subject

When both clauses share the same subject, use zu + Infinitiv

Ich versuche, pünktlich zu sein. (I try to be on time.)

dass-Satz — different subject

When the subjects differ, use a dass-clause with verb at end

Ich hoffe, dass er pünktlich ist. (I hope that he is on time.)

Where Does zu Go?

Verb TypePatternExample
Regular verbzu + Infinitivzu lernen, zu arbeiten
Separable verbprefix + zu + stemanzurufen, aufzumachen, einzuladen
Modal + InfinitivInfinitiv + zu + Modallesen zu können

For separable verbs, zu goes between the prefix and the stem: aufzumachen, anzurufen, einzuladen.

Choosing: zu-Infinitiv or dass-Satz?

Same subject → use zu + Infinitiv: Ich versuche, früh aufzustehen. (I = subject of both verbs)

Different subjects → use dass-Satz: Ich will, dass du früh aufstehst. (I ≠ du — different subjects)

Comma Rule

A comma is required before the infinitive clause when:

  • it starts with um, ohne, statt, anstatt, außer, als
  • it depends on a noun (die Idee, ...) or adjective (es ist wichtig, ...)

A comma is recommended (but optional) after verbs like versuchen, beginnen, hoffen.

Common Mistakes

✅ zu before the infinitive
