Trennbare Verben (Separable Verbs)

Separable verbs have a detachable prefix that carries additional meaning. In a main clause, the prefix splits off and moves to the end of the sentence.

Main Clause: Prefix Goes Last

The prefix moves to the very end of the main clause:

  • Ich rufe meinen Vater an. (anrufen)
  • Er macht das Fenster auf. (aufmachen)
  • Sie kommt morgen mit. (mitkommen)
  • Wir räumen das Zimmer auf. (aufräumen)

Common Separable Prefixes

PrefixGeneral meaningExample verbs
an-beginning, contactanfangen, anrufen, ankommen
auf-up, openaufmachen, aufhören, aufstehen
aus-out, offausgehen, ausschalten, aussteigen
ein-in, intoeinladen, einsteigen, einkaufen
mit-together, alongmitkommen, mitnehmen, mitmachen
vor-before, forwardvorstellen, vorbereiten
zu-closing, towardzumachen, zuhören, zukommen
ab-off, awayabfahren, abholen, abnehmen

Nebensatz: Prefix Stays Attached

In a Nebensatz, the verb goes to the end as a unit — prefix and verb together.

Hauptsatz (splits)

Prefix goes to the end.

Er ruft um 8 an.

Nebensatz (stays together)

Whole verb goes to the end unsplit.

..., weil er um 8 anruft.

With Modal Verbs: Infinitive (unsplit)

After a modal verb, the separable verb appears as an infinitive at the end — unsplit.

With a modal verb, the full separable infinitive goes to the end — unsplit:

  • Ich muss meinen Vater anrufen. (not: anrufe or rufe an)
  • Sie kann das Fenster aufmachen.
  • Er will morgen mitkommen.

Partizip II: ge- Between Prefix and Stem

In the Perfekt, the ge- goes between the prefix and the verb stem.

InfinitivPartizip IIPerfekt example
anrufenangerufenEr hat angerufen.
aufmachenaufgemachtSie hat die Tür aufgemacht.
anfangenangefangenDer Film hat angefangen.
einladeneingeladenWir haben sie eingeladen.
ausgehenausgegangenSie sind ausgegangen.

Common Mistakes

❌ Wrong — prefix not separated

In a main clause, the prefix must split off

Ich anrufe ihn. / Er aufmacht das Fenster.

✅ Right — prefix at the end

Prefix goes to the very end of the main clause

Ich rufe ihn an. / Er macht das Fenster auf.
