Passiv (Passive Voice)

The passive focuses on the action rather than who performs it. Formed with werden (conjugated) + Partizip II.

Passive Tenses

TenseFormulaExample

Key: In Perfekt Passiv, use worden (not geworden). geworden is for the active Perfekt of werden.

Active vs. Passive

Aktiv

Subject performs the action.

Der Koch kocht die Suppe. (The cook cooks the soup.)

Passiv

Subject receives the action. Agent is optional (von + Dativ).

Die Suppe wird (vom Koch) gekocht.

The Akkusativ object of the active sentence becomes the Nominativ subject of the passive.

Expressing the Agent: von + Dativ

The agent (who performs the action) is expressed with von + Dativ for people, and durch + Akkusativ for impersonal causes or means:

Agent typePrepositionExample
Person/animatevon + DativDas Buch wurde von der Lehrerin gelesen.
Impersonal causedurch + AkkusativDie Brücke wurde durch den Sturm zerstört.

The agent is often omitted entirely — passive voice shifts focus from who did something to what happened:

  • Das Gesetz wurde geändert. (The law was changed. — by whom? irrelevant.)
  • Die Fenster werden geputzt. (The windows are being cleaned.)

Passive in Nebensätze

In a subordinate clause, the auxiliary (wird/wurde/worden ist) goes to the very end:

  • Er weiß, dass das Fenster geöffnet wird. (He knows that the window is being opened.)
  • Sie sagt, dass das Buch gelesen worden ist. (She says that the book has been read.)
  • Ich höre, dass die Musik gespielt wird. (I hear that the music is being played.)

Zustandspassiv vs. Vorgangspassiv

The werden-passive (Vorgangspassiv) describes a process. The sein-passive (Zustandspassiv) describes a resulting state.

Vorgangspassiv (werden)

Process — the action is happening.

Die Tür wird geschlossen. (The door is being closed.)

Zustandspassiv (sein)

State — the result of a completed action.

Die Tür ist geschlossen. (The door is closed.)

When to Use Passive

Use passive when the action matters more than who performed it. Common in:

  • Scientific and academic writing: Die Probe wurde analysiert.
  • News reporting: Das Gebäude wurde zerstört.
  • Formal instructions: Die Formulare werden ausgefüllt.
