Imperativ (Imperative)

The command form. Used for instructions, requests, advice, and orders.

Formation

German has three imperative forms — du, ihr, and Sie (formal). The matrix below covers regular verbs, e → i / e → ie stem-changers, the a → ä exception (no umlaut in imperative), and the irregular sein.

ClassInfinitivduihrSie (formal)
regularmachenMach(e)!Macht!MachenSie!
kommenKomm!Kommt!KommenSie!

e → i (du keeps the shift)gebenGib!Gebt!GebenSie!
nehmenNimm!Nehmt!NehmenSie!

sehenSieh!Seht!SehenSie!
a → ä (NO umlaut in imperative)fahrenFahr(e)!Fahrt!FahrenSie!
schlafenSchlaf(e)!Schlaft!SchlafenSie!
sein (irregular)seinSei!Seid!SeienSie!

du-form: bare stem ((e) optional). ihr-form: stem + t. Sie-form: stem + en + Sie.

The -e on the du-form is optional for most verbs (Mach! or Mache!) but required when the stem ends in -d, -t, -ig, -m, -n after a consonant (Öffne! Arbeite! Entschuldige!).

Separable Verbs

The prefix goes to the end of the clause:

  • Mach die Tür auf! (aufmachen)
  • Ruf mich an! (anrufen)
  • Räum dein Zimmer auf! (aufräumen)
  • Hör auf, so laut zu sprechen! (aufhören)

Reflexive Verbs in the Imperative

Reflexive verbs keep their reflexive pronoun. The pronoun matches the form of address:

dudichWasch dich! / Setz dich!
ihreuchWascht euch! / Setzt euch!
SiesichWaschen Sie sich! / Setzen Sie sich!
