Plusquamperfekt (Past Perfect)

Describes an action that happened before another past action. Structure: hatte/war (Präteritum of haben/sein) + Partizip II.

Plusquamperfekt (earlier action)

hatte/war + Partizip II — the action that happened FIRST.

Ich hatte schon gegessen, als er kam.

Präteritum (later action)

Simple past — the action that happened SECOND.

... als er kam.

Formation

Personmit habenmit sein
ichhatte gemachtwar gegangen
duhattest gemachtwarst gegangen
er/sie/eshatte gemachtwar gegangen
wirhatten gemachtwaren gegangen
ihrhattet gemachtwart gegangen
sie/Siehatten gemachtwaren gegangen

The same haben/sein rules from Perfekt apply: movement verbs and state-change verbs use war, everything else uses hatte.

Word Order in Complex Sentences

In a subordinate clause (Nebensatz), the Partizip II comes before the auxiliary:

  • Nachdem er das Buch gelesen hatte, legte er es weg. (After he had read the book, he put it away.)
  • Als sie gegessen hatte, ging sie schlafen. (After she had eaten, she went to sleep.)

The auxiliary (hatte/war) always goes to the very end of the Nebensatz.

When to Use Plusquamperfekt

Use it when two past events happen in sequence and you want to clarify which one came first.

Common conjunctions: nachdem (after), bevor (before), als (when).

nachdem + Plusquamperfekt is the most common pattern:

Plusquamperfekt vs. Perfekt

Plusquamperfekt

An earlier past event — viewed from another past event.

Ich hatte schon gegessen. (before something else happened)

Perfekt

A past event — viewed from the present.

Ich habe schon gegessen. (I already ate, right now)

Frequency Note

Plusquamperfekt is more common in written German and narrative prose than in everyday speech. In casual conversation, speakers often use Perfekt for both events even when one clearly happened first.
