Konjunktiv II (Subjunctive II)

The Konjunktiv II is used for things that are not real: wishes, hypothetical situations, polite requests, and unreal conditions. Think of it as the "what if" mood.

WishesHypotheticalsPolite requestsUnreal conditions

Formation: würde + Infinitiv

For most verbs, use würde (would) + infinitive. This is the easy, modern form. Endings are color-coded the same way as the Präteritum (because Konjunktiv II builds off the Präteritum stem).

Personwürde
ichwürde
duwürdest
er/sie/eswürde
wirwürden
ihrwürdet
sie/Siewürden

Special Konjunktiv II forms (preferred over würde for these verbs)

Sein, haben, werden, and the modals all have one-word Konjunktiv II forms — built from the Präteritum stem plus an umlaut. These sound more natural than würde + Infinitiv for these particular verbs.

Personwäre (sein)hätte (haben)könnte (können)müsste (müssen)dürfte (dürfen)sollte (sollen)
ichwärehättekönntemüsstedürftesollte
duwärsthättestkönntestmüsstestdürftestsolltest
er/sie/eswärehättekönntemüsstedürftesollte
wirwärenhättenkönntenmüsstendürftensollten
ihrwärthättetkönntetmüsstetdürftetsolltet
sie/Siewärenhättenkönntenmüsstendürftensollten

A handful of strong verbs also have one-word Konjunktiv II forms used in slightly more formal speech — wüsste (wissen), gäbe (geben), käme (kommen), ginge (gehen). Most other verbs default to würde + Infinitiv.

Uses

1. Wishes (Wünsche)

Konjunktiv II expresses wishes — things you want but don't have:

  • Ich wäre gern reicher. (I wish I were richer.)
  • Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich reisen. (If I had time, I would travel.)
  • Ich wünschte, es wäre Sommer. (I wish it were summer.)

2. Hypothetical / Unreal Conditions (Irreale Bedingungen)

The pattern: Wenn + Konjunktiv II, ... Konjunktiv II.

For "if...then" sentences where the condition is unreal or unlikely:

  • Wenn es nicht regnete, würden wir spazieren gehen. (If it weren't raining, we would go for a walk.)
  • Wenn ich du wäre, würde ich das nicht tun. (If I were you, I wouldn't do that.)
  • Ohne deine Hilfe hätte ich es nicht geschafft. (Without your help, I wouldn't have managed.)

3. Polite Requests (Höfliche Bitten)

Konjunktiv II makes requests softer and more polite:

  • Könnten Sie mir helfen? (Could you help me?)
  • Ich hätte gern einen Tee. (I would like a tea.)
  • Würden Sie bitte warten? (Would you please wait?)
  • Dürfte ich kurz fragen? (Might I ask briefly?)

würde-Construction vs. Special Forms

For most verbs, use würde + Infinitiv — it's clearer and safer: Ich würde kommen. / Sie würde schlafen.

Use the special forms for sein, haben, and modal verbs — they sound more natural: Ich wäre / Ich hätte / Ich könnte / Ich müsste

Mixing is fine: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen.

Konjunktiv II vs. Präteritum

Konjunktiv II (unreal)

Hypothetical / wish

Wenn ich reich wäre... (but I'm not)

Präteritum (real)

Past fact

Ich war gestern krank. (I actually was)

For regular verbs, Konjunktiv II and Präteritum look identical. That's why we use würde + infinitive instead:

  • Präteritum: Ich kaufte ein Buch. (I bought a book.)
  • Konjunktiv II: Ich würde ein Buch kaufen. (I would buy a book.)

Common Mistakes

❌ Indikativ (direct question)

Can sound blunt or demanding

Können Sie mir helfen? (Can you help me?)

✅ Konjunktiv II (polite request)

Softer, more polite — preferred in formal contexts

Könnten Sie mir helfen? (Could you help me?)
